Reclaim Rutgers! Coalition Meeting

Faculty, staff and students united!

Attention HPAE Reps and activists: You’re invited to attend an important union coalition meeting on Thursday, May 1st, to meet our Rutgers union counterparts, and help coordinate our contract campaign goals and activities.

In 2012, when the Governor and Legislature reorganized our public research universities in New Jersey, our coalition of Higher Education and Health Care Unions mobilized to win significant protections for workers, students, patients and the communities we serve.

The merger is now nearly one year old, but our work is not done. On July 1st, important layoff protections in the law will expire and President Barchi and the Board of Governors have embarked on a strategic plan that calls for restructuring central administration, outsourcing services, reorganizing units and making “hard choices.”

While the reorganization has created significant challenges for the staff and faculty at the University, it presents enormous opportunities for our unions. With the merger of UMDNJ, there are now almost 20,000 union members at Rutgers representing 80% of the University’s workforce. Union contracts covering the vast majority of RU’s employees will expire this year and must be renegotiated.

Our ability to work together for a fair contract at Rutgers can help us continue to shape the reorganization in way that respects the commitment of our staff and faculty, and meets the needs of our students, patients and communities we serve.

We have strength in numbers, power in unity.
