Local 5094 Bargaining Update for Rutgers University, November 8, 2018

  1. Management presented their second insulting counter proposal, moving up to 1%/year, no step movement. We emphasized the need for step movement in this round of the contract to address discrepancies between members on the lower steps and the steps the University is currently hiring at. We also made an immediate wage counter to quicken the pace of negotiations.
  2. We made a proposal to address the fact that Rutgers Legacy employees receive an additional day on some years including this year during the University’s holiday shutdown. The four mandatory leave days negotiated in the last contract were intended to address the discrepancy, but on some years it’s five days. Despite the clear intent of the original agreement, Rutgers is pushing back on our proposal.
  3. We submitted a counter on lactation spaces.
  4. Despite their proposal to cut Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) leave from 52 weeks to 12 weeks in exchange for three sick days, they have yet to provide a response to our information request on the cost to Rutgers of current FMLA and sick leave utilization, which we would need to negotiate the matter. They had promised to provide the information today but did not.
