Statement of Debbie White, RN and President on the Resignation of John Kastanis, University Hospital CEO

December 6, 2018

During CEO John Kastanis’ tenure at University Hospital, HPAE members have raised concerns for patient safety and the stability of the hospital. Unionized workers have spoken up to protect the interests of staff, patients and the community. As Kastanis steps down, the Board of Directors must do an extensive search in selecting new leadership that will work with the staff and the community to improve conditions in the hospital. In addition, the state of New Jersey must take steps to ensure there is public oversight of any future public/private partnership before the last public hospital in NJ is privatized without input from the community impacted by such a deal. This is an opportunity for public officials to lead the way to assure the community will have a voice in establishing the future of University Hospital.
