President's Message

I have reached the final chapter of my nursing career. I have been a nurse for forty four years, thirty five of which I have spent at Christ Hospital. It has been a very enriching and rewarding experience. It is now time for me to explore other venues in my life. I am retiring effective June 1, 2008.

Jody Panageas, our local Vice President will take over the Presidency. I never dreamed of leading the organizing efforts and becoming elected the first President of HPAE Local 5186 of Christ Hospital. My entire life I was always a follower and never a leader. You have made me a leader, a task I thought I could not tackle. Being a member of a union gives me a sense of belonging. I feel safe, as I am empowered by the solidarity of the members. You are my strength. No task seemed impossible as long as we worked together. We have our second contract, better than the first, because of our unity.

As I leave, I feel, I have left so much still undone. I trust you to carry on, continuing to protect and improve all aspects of our contract. My deepest regret is that we should have unionized a long time ago. Then I wouldn’t have run out of time. It was an honor and pleasure to serve all of you. I left footprints for the future generation of nurses of Christ hospital to follow. Christ Hospital, HPAE Local 5186 – Our Union is our Legacy!
