Speaker: Allison Bressler, MA, Co-Founder/Co-Director of APFC

Ms. Bressler has counseled, and advocated for, hundreds of adult, teen and child victims of domestic violence in New York and New Jersey. She also serves as an expert witness on domestic abuse cases in Bergen and Union counties. Ms. Bressler’s expertise was recently called upon by Scientific American Mind magazine to contribute an article on intimate partner abuse in affluent communities.

Upon completing this interactive workshop, participants will be able to

  • Identify and define all types of abuse and the dynamics of power and control
  • Identify the risk factors associated with leaving an abuser
  • Identify safe and effective intervention strategies to support victims and their families
  • Identify components of a safety plan and resources for support

Contact hours awarded: Nurses: 5.5 Contact Hours; Social Workers and LPC’s: 5.5 non-clinical credits; Anyone: 5.5 Domestic Violence Specialist (DVS) credits

Required steps for successful completion: Attendees must complete the entire class, and the evaluation; and sign the attendance sheet in order to receive credits.

The speakers have nothing to disclose; there are no conflicts of interest, sponsorship, or financial/commercial support being supplied for these activities. Workshops are based on best practices that acknowledge and respect the needs of victims from diverse populations.

5.5 Contact Hours for Nurses for each of these courses: DV101, Effects on Children & Teen Dating Abuse. This continuing nursing education activity was approved by the New Jersey State Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

These courses, DV101 (Approval# 161005-1130), Effects of Domestic Violence on Children (Approval #161005-1132), and Teen Dating Abuse (Approval# 161005-1133), provided by A Partnership for Change, are approved for continuing education by the NJ Social Work Continuing Education Approval Collaborative. CE Approval Collaborative Approval Period: 7/28/16 – 8/31/18. Social workers and LPC’s will receive 5.5 non-clinical continuing education hours for participating in EACH course.
