HPAE and Partner Organizations Tell Christie and NJ Legislators: Keep Our Hospitals Safe

Nurses and health professionals joined together to Keep Hospitals Safe on Monday, February 27, at the Trenton Statehouse and demand Trenton fully fund hospital inspections and pass patient safety, worker protection laws.

Local 5058 Holds Membership Retreat/CE Event

Local 5058 held its annual Member Retreat on Monday at the Neptune City First Aid Building. Local 5058 President Kendra McCann (see photo above) provided an update on the upcoming negotiations with Hackensack Meridian. In addition, there were CE workshops on staffing and legal issues which provided a total of 5.0 contact hours for members who attended both workshops.

HPAE Calls on Cumberland County Freeholders to Save Our Healthcare

Inspira RN and Local 5131 Rep Karen Johnson presented a resolution to the Cumberland County Freeholder Board to urge Congress and the President not to repeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA). “As a Registered Nurse on the front lines of care, every day I witness how important it is for our patients and community members to have access to affordable, quality healthcare,” Karen shared.

This Week in Labor History: U.S. Steel Recognizes the Union in 1937

Committee of Industrial Organizations (CIO) president John L. Lewis and U.S. Steel President Myron Taylor sign a landmark contract in which the bitterly anti-union company officially recognized the CIO as sole negotiator for the company’s unionized workers. Included: the adoption of overtime pay, the 40-hour work week, and a big pay hike – March 1, 1937
