Subject: Area Hospitals
Over the past few weeks there
has been several articles regarding the former Pascack Valley Hospital,
now HUMC of Pascack Valley. I was one of many who fought to keep PVH
open. I spoke before the Governor's committee on hospital
rationalization, met with politicians, HUMC and others. Towards the end,
the feeling was that HUMC would be the knight in white armor and save
PVH. As you know, this didn't happen. HUMC had a different plan. Now,
HUMC wants to re-open as an acute care facility for profit. I say no for
two reasons.
One, Not only has The Valley
Hospital and Englewood Medical Center absorbed most of the patients from
PVH, but they also hired many of the former PVH employees. Not the case
with HUMC.
They only hired a handful and
some of them have since left. Mr. Ferguson stated a town meeting last
year in answering a question,"will HUMC hire PVH employees?" Mr.
Ferguson replied, "the best one qualified for the job will be chosen." I
know many PVH employees who are more than qualified, yet they didn't get
a position, let alone a phone call.
Second, a reminder to all about
"for profit" hospitals. For profit hospitals are all about the money,
not patients. Talk to patients and employees at for profit facilities
and get their opinions of the facilities.
I know the need exists for an
Emergency Room in the Pascack Valley area, so let HUMC keep the ER open.
As an acute care facility, NO. There is no need to disrupt patients and
employees who have already made changes, as well as, the other hospitals
that have expanded to handle the new patient flow.
