I spent part of the Labor Day weekend with a couple of public school teachers. One showed off the items she had collected from her garden and the woods over the summer out of habit, just as she has done for over 30 years. She would bring them in to show the students each fall to help flesh out some of the lessons. She won’t be doing that this year, however. Gov. Chris Christie scared her into retirement.

The other teacher mentioned that she would be attending classes every weekend throughout the fall in pursuit of a graduate degree and was celebrating her last free time until winter.

CHICAGO — A nurse may soon be your doctor. With a looming shortage of primary care doctors, 28 states are considering expanding the authority of nurse practitioners. These nurses with advanced degrees want the right to practice without a doctor's watchful eye and to prescribe narcotics. And if they hold a doctorate, they want to be called "Doctor."

I’m not a stupid person, and I recognize and accept the need for many reforms. I’m a taxpayer and am as disgusted by my $12,000 property tax as anyone. But I resent the way Gov. Chris Christie demonizes teachers (I am not one) and public employee unions.
