HPAE “Union Building” Training Programs

Basic Union Rep Training:

The Basic Rep Training has 12 sections or “modules” covering the full range of Union Rep activities. There are modules on the legal rights of Reps, involving co-workers in union events, grievance handling, and key state and federal employment laws, such as the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA).

Advanced Grievance Training:

The Advanced Grievance Training takes a more in-depth look at the grievance and arbitration process, including creative grievance remedies, mobilizing the membership to win grievances, and preparing grievances for arbitration.

Negotiations Training:

The Negotiations Training is a comprehensive training focusing on the following topics: what it takes to win a good contract, the legal framework for collective bargaining, the negotiations process, the role of the negotiations committee, building teamwork and unity among the negotiations committee, and bargaining tactics.

Building Effective Local Committees:

The goal of this training is to provide you with the “tools” you’ll need to create and maintain more effective committees. Topics include why we form local committees, how to recruit members to a committee, the role of the committee chair, and how to ensure that a joint committee (e.g. Labor/Management) actually solves problems at the workplace.

Officers’ Training

Beginning with an examination of the roles and responsibilities of HPAE local officers, the training then focuses on the elements of successful leadership teams, including the need for unity and teamwork, a consensus on goals, and a clear division of responsibilities among local officers. The training also provides local officers with an opportunity to assess their local’s functioning and identify needed changes.

Any of the above trainings can be combined to meet the needs of your local.
