Statement of Debbie White, RN and HPAE President on Governor Murphy Signing into Law for Stricter Financial Requirements of For-Profit Hospitals

Tuesday, January 21, 2020

After a decade of uncertain business practices of for-profit hospitals in NJ, we applaud the Governor for signing legislation to require stricter financial disclosures and greater accountability when those companies put the financial health of the hospital at risk. Our union members have fought long and hard for these protections. Finally, the same transparency that non-profits are held to will be required of for-profit healthcare companies. This legislation will make public any financial dealings that put patient care at risk while the owners reap large profits.

HPAE nurses and healthcare workers also applaud the leadership of Assemblyman Chiaravalloti and Assemblywoman McKnight who championed this legislation. Their efforts also go beyond the legislation as they continue to advocate for a new buyer for CarePoint Health hospitals. They have helped establish a hospital authority in Bayonne to ensure that Bayonne Medical Center remains in the city. We are grateful and thank them for their all of their efforts.
