A Busy Year For Our Union!

Happy New Year!

January 1 marks just thirteen months until our Union Contract Expires! That means we will be in negotiations even sooner. Contract negotiations are our best opportunity to bargain for better pay, benefits, and staffing. Wining a great contract will take all union members standing together, putting pressure on management. Over the next several months, we’ll be preparing, and you’ll learn what you can do.

Union Elections: HPAE Members at UMC are part of Local 5107, which represents healthcare workers in nursing homes and Visiting Nurse Associations.

Our union is a democracy, and this year, we will be electing our President, Secretary-Treasurer, and Vice President. Any member in Good Standing is eligible to run. Nominations are due January 9. More information can be found at https://www.hpae.org/2024/12/notice-of-2024-nominations-and-election-of-hpae-local-5107-officers/

Union Raises: All Union RNs will receive a 3% across-the-board raise effective February 1.

Health and Safety: Following a long grievance process, UMC has finally written and implemented Workplace Violence Prevention Polices for each facility.

Cancellation Policy: Due to a technicality, we were able to negotiate a new benefit mid-contract. If you are clocked in and sent home before your shift ends, you are now entitled to all time worked, plus at least one hour’s pay.

Union Time: Union Nurses are entitled to all scheduled shifts over agencies. UMC has not been respecting this rule, so we are filing a grievance. If you have lost work time to an agency, please report it immediately.

Union Benefits: As an HPAE Member, you and your family are entitled to a wide range of discounts, scholarships, and other benefits. More details at https://www.hpae.org/resource/benefits/  https://www.aft.org/member-benefits and  https://www.unionplus.org/ (Use AFT as your International)

If you are disciplined, investigated, or called into a meeting that you reasonably believe could lead to discipline or investigation, you have the right to have Union Representation present.
