Addiction Treatment Workers file for a Union Election to Vote to Join HPAE
Those on the front lines of treating individuals with substance abuse and alcohol addiction see the devastating impact the current drug epidemic has on the lives of people. On January 8th, workers filed with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) seeking a union election in which workers will vote whether to join the Health Professionals and Allied Employees (HPAE), AFT/AFL-CIO.
“Workers at Alina Lodge are advocates for a population recovering from addiction and alcoholism so it is crucial that workers’ voices are heard, and resources they need are provided to ensure that quality treatment is the top priority,” said Debbie White, RN, HPAE President.
According to HPAE, the union has filed for recognition with the NLRB on behalf of the nearly 100 workers at Alina Lodge who are consistently required to work mandatory overtime without additional pay or benefits placing workers in an untenable situation.
Unfortunately, within hours of filing for an election with the NLRB, Alina Lodge violated labor law by retaliating against at least five of the workers that were key players in the organizing campaign. HPAE has filed charges with the Labor Board.
“Letting workers have an election free of intimidation is not just their right, but necessary to protect the voices of workers who speak up for their guests during difficult and challenging times,” added President White.
Alina Lodge is a 50 + bed Joint Accredited substance abuse treatment center that was founded in 1957.
