Stand with Nurse Caren and Against Unjust Termination
This could happen to any one of us:
Caren McCain, RN, was fired from University Hospital without Just Cause in February 2025.
Caren was fired for allegedly abandoning a patient based on insufficient evidence. The Union was provided with statements from only two out of four witnesses. These statements are the only proof provided.
Both of the witnesses state there was another RN who refused the patient, yet that nurse was not disciplined or even investigated. To be clear: the Union is not calling for additional discipline, but for a thorough examination of the circumstances and fair treatment.
Caren has no disciplinary record in her six-year long tenure at the hospital, yet she was terminated without progressive discipline and no regard for mitigating and extenuating circumstances.
The Union filed a grievance to defend Caren. The hearing will take place on April 7th, 2025.
What can you do to help? Wear a “Stand with Nurse Caren” sticker in the week of April 7th, 2025 to show support for your fellow RN and Just Cause!
Union Leaders and Staff will be at the hospital to provide you with stickers beginning Monday
In solidarity,
Your UH 5089 Local Executive Board
