HPAE endorses Mikie Sherrill for NJ Governor
HPAE, New Jersey’s largest union of nurses and healthcare workers, has endorsed Mikie Sherrill for NJ Governor. In the 2025 Elections, HPAE is supporting candidates who have shown support for the passage of the “Patient Protection and Safe Staffing Act,” which mandates guaranteed safe staffing ratios in all hospitals.
The decades-long understaffing crisis in healthcare facilities has reached a critical point now. Short staffing in healthcare compromises the quality of care. It also has resulted in an overburdened and overworked nursing staff who are leaving their profession,” White said. “HPAE has been extremely successful in bargaining safe staffing in union contracts with our employers, but every patient in New Jersey should have access to a hospital with guaranteed safe staffing standards.”
“Mikie Sherrill is a strong ally in Washington D.C.,” White continued. “Now we need her strength and tenacity to lead our State. Healthcare workers are ready to help her become the next Governor of New Jersey. She is the candidate who will make sure every New Jersey patient has access to affordable and safe patient care.”
In response to the announcement, Mikie Sherrill, said:
“Our health care workers make incredible sacrifices to keep New Jerseyans safe and healthy,” Sherrill said. “It’s critical that we ensure they have the resources they need to continue serving our communities. I’m so proud to earn HPAE’s endorsement and, as governor, I look forward to working together to support safe staffing ratios in our medical facilities, address workforce shortages, and make investments that will lower health care costs for New Jerseyans.”
“And, as Jack Ciattarelli cheers on Trump’s bill to cut Medicare and Medicaid and defund our hospitals,” Sherrill added, “I’ll fight back against the attacks coming from Washington that will be devastating to families, workers, hospitals, and nursing homes across New Jersey.”
Along with Sherrill, HPAE has endorsed candidates for state, county, municipal and board of education offices.
