HPAE Statements on the Council in Jersey City Approving Ordinance 25-124

“We applaud the City Council in Jersey City on approving Ordinance 25-124 to maintain Christ Hospital’s 16-acre campus as a Medical Zone. The patients, Jersey City and Hudson County residents need stable and basic healthcare, which Christ Hospital has provided continuously for over 150 years. Passage of this ordinance will be a first step toward guaranteeing healthcare services remain in Jersey City.”

~ HPAE President Debbie White, RN.

“Hudson Regional Health created a crisis in healthcare for Jersey City and Hudson County residents by unilaterally and illegally shutting down Christ Hospital. My heart just goes out to patients and the community in general for the hurdles they now must jump through to receive the care they need. That is why I appreciate the City Council approving Ordinance 25-124 to ensure the community will continue to have access to medical services in this community.”

~ HPAE Local 5186 President Rebecca Lowe, RN

“With respect to Christ Hospital, the purpose of the M Medical District is to ensure continuity of medical and healthcare services associated with the hospital and/or other medical related uses traditionally associated with such facility in order to protect the community in a way that the Department of Health failed to do in 2012 and is likely to fail to do now. Since the current owner of Christ Hospital has clearly shown no interest in maintaining any medical or medically related services on the site, it is thus necessary to eliminate non-medical related uses if we are going to satisfy the explicit purpose and intent of adopting the M Medical District in the first place.”
