CODE RED: Honoring Black History Mont

Black History Month, Honoring Healthcare Workers

50 years ago, a group of New Jersey nurses channeled Mahoney’s pioneering spirit to form the Union that became the Health Professionals & Allies Employees, New Jersey largest union of healthcare workers. HPAE has been fighting to raise the standards of care in the industry, especially on Safe Staffing, ever since. In 2024, HPAE will continue the fight to make staffing ratios a law in New Jersey. Inspira Case Managers set to Vote on Joining HPAE

The NLRB has set Wednesday, March 6th as Union Election Day for Inspira Health Case Managers RNs. They are looking forward to Election Day so they can Vote to join HPAE! Healthcare workers deserve to have a voice in their workplace to advocate for themselves and their patients. If you would like to send a message of support before they vote, email your message to Tyler Mitchell, HPAE Organizing Director tmitchell@hpae.org.

New Legislative Session brings a New Staffing Bill

A new bill has been introduced by Senator Vitale and Assemblywoman Quijano appropriately named the “Patient Protection and Safe Staffing Act.” This new legislation revises the nurse to patient ratios, now includes ratios for unlicensed assistive personnel and sets financial penalties for facilities that repeatedly violate the set ratios. HPAE Local 5147 Ratify Contract that Protects Patients with Safe Staffing Ratios

HPAE Local 5147 members—Registered Nurses, Professionals, Technical Staff, and Service Workers—have ratified a new three-year union contract with Hudson Regional Hospital in Secaucus, NJ. The new contract sets nurse to patient staffing ratios and commits the employer to develop a Staffing Committee with union members. The purpose of this committee will be to evaluate the contractual ratios and to make recommendations for new staffing standards for nurses and for other healthcare workers such as nursing assistants. The new contract provisions not only benefit patients and workers, but will also give the Employer an advantage in recruiting and retaining healthcare workers who have been rapidly leaving the profession due to untenable working conditions. Click here for more details on the contract.

United Methodist RNs at Collingswood Join HPAE

A majority of RNs at United Methodist Communities in Collingswood told the employer they want to join HPAE. UMC has signed a Voluntary Recognition Agreement with HPAE and the RNs are now HPAE members! Congratulations to this group of #UnionStrong professionals who took the steps to form their own union so they can advocate for their patients and themselves.
