New Nurse Caucus Established at Jersey Shore Medical Center
Members leaders of Local 5058 at Jersey Shore Medical Center kicked off the “New Nurse Caucus” at an enthusiastic and well-attended meeting last week. The caucus is led by a growing group of new nurses leaders at the hospital whose goal is to engage and educate new nurses and to increase participation in union activities.
“Labor Walkers” Needed
On Tuesday, November 7, 2017 voters in New Jersey will go to the polls to elect the next Governor, Lieutenant Governor, NJ State Senators and Assembly persons. In Philadelphia, voters will head to the ballot box to vote on municipal and judicial candidates. We need to talk with our co-workers and neighbors about the key issues facing our union and the candidates who “have our back.” Sign up to help to make calls and knock on doors on our “Labor Walks” to urge union members to support pro-labor candidates.

On October 5th HPAE will be holding its bi-annual Professional Issue Conference (PIC). The 2017 HPAE PIC will offer a dynamic mix of workshops ranging from professional and personal development to broader organizing, policy, and political education. The keynote speaker will be Lilo Stainton, a writer for NJ Spotlight, who focuses on healthcare issues.
This Week in Labor History: The Founding of TDU
The Teamsters for a Democratic Union (TDU) is formally founded at an Ohio convention, during a period of serious corruption in the union. Two years earlier at an IBT convention in Las Vegas, a union reform leader who (unsuccessfully) called for direct election of officers and a limit on officers’ salaries had been beaten by thugs – September 18, 1978
