Local 5107 UMC Union Negotiations Update December 19, 2025
Last Night (12/18/25), your Union Negotiations Team met with management for our last session of 2025.
We had productive discussions and came to six tentative agreements:
- Layoffs: Guarantee 1 week of severance per year of service up to 8 weeks for layoffs of less than 50 employees (NJ Law covers severance in layoffs of 50 or more, with 1 week for every year, with no cap), Seniority will be used to break ties, No layoffs to replace RNs with Supplementary staff or Supervisors.
- Discipline: Clearer language, 15-day limit on issuing discipline.
- Definitions: FT is 32 hrs/week, Agency won’t be used to permanently fill open positions, provisions for transfer among facilities).
- Health and Safety: Broken Safety devices replaced promptly, UMC will reimburse for personal items broken by residents.
- Education: Educational Reimbursement $1,500/year FT, $750/year PT, Requests won’t be unreasonably denied.
- Job Posting: Qualified Members hired over external applicants.
Management provided counterproposals to our ‘Professional Practice’ proposals. We made significant progress on ensuring medical supplies are appropriately restocked. Managements counterproposals on forced shift changes and RNs taking on non-RN duties did not provide enough protection to RNs, so we put forward a compromise proposal. We will continue to work towards a workable solution.
So far, because of your support, we have reached a total of 14 Tentative Agreements in the last month, including;
- Improved Successorship Language (to protect our rights if our workplace is sold)
- Including all Per-Diems in our Union
- Extending the window to file grievances from 5 to 10 days
- An additional 15 Minute break for RNs who work 12-hour shifts
- Probationary Employees will receive Holiday pay after 30 days
- Guaranteeing that 100% vesting in the 403(b) plan is immediate.
Some of these agreements are new benefits, while others are incorporating current benefits and policies into our Contract – ensuring that they cannot be changed without negotiation.
Our Next Session will be on January 6th at 4:00 PM. Register/join here: https://aft.zoom.us/meeting/register/8c-zIDR3TieeSlSVWSNJMQ
