NJ State AFL-CIO Union Members Elected to PERS Board, Increasing Labor’s Majority

From the NJ AFL-CIO, June 5, 2015

We have great news to share: Both New Jersey State AFL-CIO Public Employee Committee-endorsed candidates have won their elections to the Public Employees’ Retirement System Board of Trustees!

The election of Tracy Smith of AFSCME Council 73 to the County seat and Carey Brown of CWA Local 1037 to the State seat means that our brothers and sisters in the public sector maintain their majority on the nine-member PERS board – and increased that majority by one vote!

Keeping a majority on the PERS board allows labor to move forward with an independent audit of alternative pension investment fees and lets us continue to retain counsel for the pension funding lawsuit now before the state Supreme Court. Labor representatives on the board push for an agenda that protects benefits and serves pensioners.
