New Manager Named for BRMC…and Other HPAE News

New Manager Named for Bergen Regional Medical Center

Bergen County has awarded a 19 year contract to Care Plus Bergen, a partnership of mental health and addiction providers, to manage and operate Bergen Regional Medical Center, the state’s largest hospital. Local 5091 represents a total of 500 RNs and professional staff at the facility.

Jersey Shore, SOMC RNs Fight for Safe Staffing

Over 60 HPAE members joined the Local 5058 and 5138 bargaining committees on Monday to demand that Hackensack Meridian Health agree to safe staffing language in the locals’ contracts. The nurses who attended the bargaining session shared their experiences of how difficult it is to provide quality patient care when we are understaffed.

Pressure Mounts on Christie to Sign the Paid Family Leave Expansion Bill

Supporters of a bill to strengthen and improve New Jersey’s Paid Family Leave Insurance Program held a press conference and rally in Trenton yesterday to urge Governor Christie to sign the bill. Christie has until August 10 to decide whether to sign the bill or veto it. HPAE participated in the press conference and strongly urges our members to contact the Governor.

SAVE THE DATE: HPAE Professional Issues Conference (PIC) on October 5th

HPAE will be holding its bi-annual PIC on Thursday, October 5. We’ll be offering workshops and panels on changes in the health industry, clinical practice issues, strengthening our union, and programs to improve wellness. Many of the workshops will provide contact hours. More information on the workshops and registration will be provided soon.


This Week in Labor History: The “Great Upheaval” of 1877

The Great Uprising nationwide railway strike begins in Martinsburg, W.Va., after railroad workers are hit with their second pay cut in a year. In the following days, strike riots spread through 17 states. The next week, federal troops were called out to force an end to the strike – July 14, 1877
