Layoffs at Rutgers

Some HPAE members received layoff notices last Friday, effective July 7th, as “a result of the integration of Rutgers and UMDNJ.” Layoff restrictions in the New Jersey Medical and Health Sciences Education Restructuring Act expired on July 1st, 2014.

Our HPAE union contract provides layoff rights. If you receive a layoff notice, contact a union representative immediately.

Layoffs must be in order of seniority within a department and job classification. Most HPAE members have the right to fill a vacancy in the same or previous title; to bump the least senior employee in the same or previous title on the same campus; or to be placed on a recall list.

Be sure to inform your boss and Human Resources that you wish to exercise all of your layoff rights

We will fight to enforce these rights.

Management informed the Labor Management Committee (LMC) about the pending layoffs but has not provided further detailed information that we have requested making it impossible to engage in any meaningful discussion about how to avoid layoffs or minimize the impact of any layoffs.

We are planning an appropriate response. More information will be announced soon.
