Banita Herndon, an ER nurse and Local 5089 Grievance Chair at University Hospital, received the “Nurse of the Year” award yesterday from The Concerned Black Nurses of Newark (CBNN) at their 33rd annual Scholarship & Awards luncheon. After receiving the award, Banita expressed her thanks to the organization and discussed why it plays such a valuable role.

The CBNN was formed in 1975 for the purpose of improving health care in Black Communities. Realizing the pressing need for health education, health promotion and access to healthcare for the underserved population in Newark and other cities, African-American nurses came together to advocate for health care for the underserved.
