July 15, 2015

The Jersey City Council voted today to support safe staffing legislation in New Jersey. A resolution approved by the Council members “….urges passage of S1183/A647 and supports establishing minimum registered professional nurse staffing standards for hospitals and ambulatory surgery facilities and certain DHS facilities to increase the quality of patient care at Jersey City health facilities and those across the State of New Jersey…”

HPAE Public Policy Staff Jean Pierce spoke to the Council before the vote about the need for safe staffing legislation. Jean pointed out that adequate staffing levels and nurse to patient ratios are not only essential for quality patient care, but enable hospitals to avoid reductions in Medicare and Medicaid reimbursements due to low patient satisfaction evaluations and certain patient quality indicators.
