Description: Workplace violence perpetrated upon frontline healthcare workers by patients and visitors has continued to escalate year after year. The short staffing and patient acuity of the COVID pandemic only accentuated HPAE member risk of workplace violence at the workplace. This workshop reviews risk factors and the unprecedented extent of workplace violence in healthcare. Participants will gain information to identify risks, strategies to respond to violent episodes, and the elements of effective violence prevention programs in their facilities.
Cecelia Gilligan Leto is WEC’s project director focusing on safer and healthier workplaces. Leto has provided strategic advice and participatory safety and health training to thousands of workers, employers, unions, and organizations. She is an authorized OSHA trainer for 10-hour and 30-hour courses and holds a bachelor’s degree in Labor Safety and Health from the National Labor College. As the project director and lead trainer, Leto is responsible for project execution including day-to-day activities, delivering training, monitoring progress of deliverables, project planning and program reporting. Before working at WEC, from 1999 through 2005, she served as Health and Safety Project Coordinator and Assistant Training Coordinator for the Rutgers University Occupational Training and Education Consortium in New Brunswick, NJ. In those capacities, she coordinated curricula development and facilitated 12 train-the-trainer programs addressing many workplace hazards. Her areas of training expertise include systems approaches to incident investigation, OSHA rights, and joint safety and health committees. Leto currently serves as the National Council of Occupational Safety and Health Executive Board Chair. In 2016, Leto received the Educator of the Year Award from the National Council of Occupational Safety and Health and, in 2008, Leto received an award from the Health Professionals and Allied Employees for exceptional training of their members.
Outcome: Learners will acquire knowledge to identify hazards, effectively identify and respond to violent incidents, and improve violence prevention programs in their facility.

by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. P#

SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION:
The learner must attend 100 percent of each chosen session. After the learner has completed all of his or her chosen sessions, a certificate of attendance, program evaluation/survey must be completed and returned to the provider.
