HPAE Local 5089 Bargaining Update April 13, 2023

HPAE Local 5089 Bargaining Update April 13, 2023

Our HPAE Local 5089 Bargaining committee met with management on April 3, 2023, where we presented our most recent wage proposal:

Staff RNs:

  • Year 1 retro paid to July 1, 2022: 10% increase and experience step movement (30+ years of experience would get a 10% lump sum). We also proposed to extend the step scale from 26 to 30 steps
  • Years 2-4: 4% increase and experience step movement (30+ years of experience would get a $2,750 lump sum)

Nurse Clinicians and Research Nurse Clinicians:

  • Year 1 retro paid to July 1, 2022: 5% increase and experience step movement (30+ years of experience would get a $3,000 lump sum). We remained firm in our proposal to create an experience based scale for Research Nurse Clinicians
  • Years 2-4: 4.75% increase and experience step movement (30+ years of experience would get a $3,000 lump sum)

APNs:

  • Year 1 retro paid to July 1, 2022: 6% increase and experience step movement. We remained firm in our proposal to create an experience based scale for APNs
  • Year 2: 5% increase and experience step movement
  • Years 3-4: 4.75% increase and experience step movement

CRNAs:

  • Year 1 retro paid to July 1, 2022: 6.5% increase and experience step movement
  • Years 2-4: 3.25% increase and experience step movement

As a reminder, inflation is approximately 6% at the moment, and has been significantly higher in the recent past. Management’s current proposal for Staff RNs, Nurse Clinicians, Research Nurse Clinicians, and APNs was to offer a total of 11.5% (counting experience steps, not in addition to experience steps!) on base salary over four years, keeping the average increase in their proposal to 3% or less per year. They also offered measly 2% lump sum payments in addition to years 1 and 2.

For the CRNAs, they have not moved in weeks from their proposal, which effectively only offers bonuses but no raises to CRNA wages.

Our next bargaining date will be a full-day session on 4/20.

We have also scheduled virtual and in-person meetings to talk about our escalation plans, to discuss our own strike readiness, and solidarity actions related to a looming potential faculty strike.

If you don’t feel that management’s wage proposal reflects the value we as nurses bring to Rutgers, the time to act is now, attend in the next week to discuss what we need to do win a fair contract. Rutgers works because we do.
