Retiree Medical Plan Is Financially Strong….And Other HPAE News

HPAE Retiree Medical Trust Update

The Board of Trustees of the HPAE Retiree Medical Trust met on Monday to review the Trust’s financial condition, plan assets, and the medical reimbursement benefits paid out to HPAE retirees. The Trust now has over 5,100 active participants and $14.2 million in assets. Since 2008, the investment return on the Trust’s assets has been 8.18% per year.

At the meeting, the trustees also voted to approve Amendment #11 to the plan. The amendment clarifies the plan’s language on survivor benefits (but doesn’t change the benefit), adds language regarding “Qualified Domestic Relations Orders,” and, in conformity with federal law, deletes language for an external review process for claims denials (but maintains the right to have an internal hearing for appealing claims denials).

Support Our AFT Brothers and Sisters at Middlesex Community College

Middlesex County College (MCC) administrators are refusing to negotiate a fair contract with an American Federation of Teachers (AFT) local union which represents 140 professional staff and faculty at the college. The administration is using an attorney from a notorious anti-union law firm, Jackson Lewis, to lead the negotiations. We urge you to support the AFT local by signing a petition demanding that the administration bargain in good faith.
