HPAE Joins Massive Women’s Marches

HPAE members and supporters joined with the almost 4 million people who took part in the Women’s March on Washington, D.C. and over 600 “sister marches” in the United States, including massive rallies in New York City, Chicago, and Los Angeles, and in countries throughout the world. The marches and rallies sent a strong message to the new Trump administration that we are determined to protect our rights and to continue the fight for an inclusive and just society.

HPAE and Partner Organizations Form New NJ Environmental Coalition

HPAE Vice President Bernie Gerard joined leaders of several labor unions, environmental groups, faith-based organizations, and social justice movements at the State House in Trenton to announce the formation of a new state-wide coalition, Jersey Renews. The coalition’s main goal will be to urge political leaders to increase dramatically New Jersey’s commitment to fighting climate change.

Effort To Strengthen Equal Pay Protections in NJ Fails

The New Jersey State Senate failed to muster enough votes to override Governor Christie’s conditional veto of an equal pay bill sponsored by State Senator Loretta Weinberg (photo above). The bill would push New Jersey’s anti-discrimination protections beyond what the federal government currently requires, giving workers the right to recoup back pay for their entire term of employment if discrimination is proven instead of only two years. It would also triple penalties for damages.

Strike of Rochester, NY Clothing Workers

Some 10,000 clothing workers strike in Rochester, N.Y., for the 8-hour day, a 10-percent wage increase, union recognition, and extra pay for overtime and holidays. Six people were wounded over the course of the strike and one worker, 18-year-old Ida Breiman, was shot to death by a sweatshop contractor. The strike was called off in April after manufacturers agreed not to discriminate against workers for joining a union – January 23, 1913
